Heirloom Vegetables

An heirloom vegetable is a selection that was commonly grown during earlier periods in human history, but which is not used in modern mono-culture agribusiness.  A true heirloom is a cultivar that has been nurtured, selected, and handed down from one family member to another for many generations.  Some of the vegetables are endangered varieties, which were brought to North America by our ancestors who emigrated from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and other parts of the world.

Some seed companies are propagating these wonderfully flavored vegetables for commercial use.  Seeds for food from the Farm are purchased from these companies who pledge not to sell genetically modified organisms.  We also save and propagate seeds and plants  from our own selections.

Sweet potatoes from the Farm are a selection grown by the family’s grandparents.  The sunchokes grown here are a Native American variety.  All the vegetables are open pollinated by the wind or the many pollinators that call Prairie Birthday Farm their home.

"Tell me of what plant birthday a man takes notice, and I shall tell you a good deal about his vocation, his hobbies, his hay fever, and the general level of his ecological education."
