Research Grant Awarded Farm
Steward Linda received a $6,000 grant from the North Central
Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program
(NCR-SARE) for her project "Comparison of Coverings Over Permanent
Raised Beds to Extend the Growing Season for Year Round Food
Production.” This grant was awarded as part of NCR-SARE's Farmer
Rancher Grant Program.
The study will compare seven combinations
of covers over permanent raised beds to determine the best way to
extend the growing season for year round vegetable production in this
region.
Permanent raised beds will be covered with three
materials in various combinations and temperatures (ambient and
internal air and soil) measured from November through April. Multiple
cold tolerant crops will be grown to determine which cover combinations
provide the best conditions for year round production for family
consumption and local produce sales.
In 1992, the North Central
Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE)
program began a competitive grants program exclusively to fund
producers striving for agricultural sustainability.
